How to Balance Celebration and Self-Care
The holiday season often feels like an endless whirlwind of parties, treats, and to-dos. It’s easy to burn the candle at both ends, skipping workouts, indulging in chocolate over veggies, and promising yourself you’ll “get back on track” in the new year.
But what if you didn’t have to choose between celebration and self-care?
As a life coach, I believe you can find balance—the sweet spot where you can fully embrace the joy of the holidays while honoring your well-being. Let me guide you through how to make this season as fulfilling as it is fun.
Check out episode 39 of the Redo You podcast, where I dive deeper into balancing celebration and self-care, with practical tips to make it happen!
The Yin and Yang of Celebration and Self-Care
I’m all for enjoyment. In fact, one of my favorite things to teach in life coaching is how to experience pleasure without guilt. That’s where balance comes in. Think of it as yin and yang: celebration and self-care are not opposites—they complement each other. When these two work hand in hand, you’re not just surviving the season; you’re thriving in it.
It’s tempting to toss your good habits out the window for a month, dive into indulgence, and resolve to “start fresh” in January. But what if you could enjoy the best of both worlds?
Have Your Cake and Eat It Too
Self-care isn’t about depriving yourself—it’s about honoring yourself. If you’re too tired to enjoy the party or too stressed to connect with loved ones, the celebration loses its spark. Prioritizing your well-being gives your body, mind, and nervous system the resources they need to show up fully and savor the season.
A Simple Process to Stay Balanced
Here’s how to enjoy all the festivities without crashing and burning by New Year’s Day.
Take Stock of Your Self-Care Practices
Start by listing the habits that support you on a daily basis. Maybe it’s gratitude journaling, meditation, a morning walk, meal prepping, or getting a solid 8–9 hours of sleep. Even small things, like a quick moment of mindfulness or keeping one night a week free, can have a huge impact.
Take time to reflect on how each of these practices contributes to your overall well-being.
Map Out Your Holiday Calendar
Look ahead at the parties, family dinners, trips, or other celebrations on your schedule. How might these joyful moments impact your self-care? For instance, staying overnight at a friend’s house might mean skipping your morning meditation, or the office party might cut into your sleep.
Balance and Plan
Now comes the fun part: balancing indulgence with care. Think about how you can make choices that support both.
Could you invite your friend to do yoga with you in the morning?
After a lavish five-course holiday dinner, would a light 24-hour fast help you feel grounded again?
Instead of attending three parties in one week, could you pick two and fully enjoy them?
You might even decide to go all-in on the festivities, then schedule a restorative retreat for yourself after the holidays.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—your plan should feel as unique and perfect as you, my beautiful Goddess.
Adjust as You Go
Like any plan, the magic happens when you check in regularly, evaluate what’s working, and make adjustments. Maybe a week into the holidays, you realize you need a little extra downtime or a walk in nature to recharge. That’s okay! Self-care isn’t rigid—it’s a practice that evolves as you do.
The Perfect Holiday Cocktail
Life is all about balance, and the holidays are no different.
Self-care and celebration aren’t binary choices—you get to mix them together to craft your perfect holiday cocktail.
With a little intention and reflection, you’ll not only enjoy the parties more but also enter the new year feeling energized, empowered, and ready for what’s next.
As a life coach, I see self-care as the foundation for thriving in every season of life. It’s about building habits that honor your needs and your dreams, so you can step into every room, every party, every new chapter with confidence and joy.
