How to Slow Down Time: Canadian Life Coach Tips

Feel like time is passing you by?

Top Canadian Life Coach Emma Hull shares four hacks to slow down time.

On a recent vacation to Portugal I noticed how time seemed to go slowly at the start of the trip, and then speed up towards the end. As a life coach, I am always curious to better understand how our minds work, and how we can repattern mindset to our advantage so I dove into some research about the neuroscience of time perception.

  • When your brain has a lot of information to process, time appears to pass more slowly. Think about when you drive or walk to an unknown place, the journey there seems to take a long time, while the trip back appears much faster.

  • There is also an element of proportionality of time relative to how old we are. When you are 8 years old, waiting a week for something feels like forever, but in your 40s it is really not that long at all.

If you feel like the year is flying by and wish you could slow time, read on.

Why should I slow down time?

As you age your perception of time changes, and the prevalence of mundane routine tasks and daily routines make time appear to pass faster. You start the year full of hope and enthusiasm to complete projects and achieve your goals, then wake up one day realizing it is June already and you haven’t started.

Time with loved ones can seem to evaporate, and you might feel like you are missing out on creating meaningful memories. This realization often prompts a sense of urgency, a desire to make the most of every moment, but the relentless pace of life can make it difficult to break free from the cycle of routine and truly savor those fleeting, precious experiences.

As a life coach I help my clients to get the most from life.

Slowing down time is one way that you can be present in the moment and enjoy your life more fully.

How can I slow down time?

Spoiler alert! You can’t actually slow time down, but you can alter the perception of how time passes.

You know that the amount of information your brain is processing has a direct impact on your perception of time, so let’s work with that. Life coaching is all about working with yourself, not against yourself and as a life coach I specialize in helping you to find ways to manage your mindset to your advantage.

You can slow down time by increasing the amount of data your brain has to process.

Travel.

Explore new places. It doesn’t have to be an exotic overseas vacation; you could go to a local park or neighboring town. The key is to step outside your usual environment and immerse yourself in the unfamiliar, allowing new sights, sounds, and experiences to refresh your perspective.

Change Your Routines.

Take a different route to work, switch up your lunch order, get your gas from another station, or cook a different cuisine once a month. These small changes can break the monotony of daily life, offering fresh experiences and keeping your mind engaged and curious.

Learn Something New.

Get out of your comfort zone and learn a new hobby or skill. Try Pickleball, learn a language, try your hand at crochet or golf. Embracing new challenges stimulates your brain, boosts your confidence, and adds a sense of accomplishment and novelty to your everyday life.

Stop Multitasking

Focus on doing one thing at a time and doing it to the best of your ability. By giving your full attention to a single task, you can enhance your efficiency and the quality of your work. This mindful approach not only reduces stress but also allows you to fully engage with the task at hand, leading to a deeper sense of satisfaction and achievement.

What are the benefits of slowing down time?

Slowing down time means you have a greater sense of appreciation for your day, you feel like you have accomplished more, and this gives you greater motivation for tomorrow. By taking the time to savor each moment and truly engage with your tasks, you experience a deeper sense of fulfillment. This mindful approach not only makes your days feel more productive but also fuels your enthusiasm for the future.

Being present in the moment with the activities and people around you strengthens your connections, building greater resilience and boosting happiness. When you fully immerse yourself in interactions and experiences, you cultivate stronger relationships and create lasting memories. This presence fosters emotional resilience, helping you navigate challenges with a positive outlook and enhancing your overall sense of well-being and joy.

An added bonus of slowing down time is increased neuroplasticity which can increase your focus, memory and creativity. By consciously slowing down and engaging deeply with your activities, you allow your brain to form new connections and pathways. This enhances your ability to concentrate, boosts your memory retention, and sparks greater creativity.

Slowing down helps you to appreciate the present moment, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.
